The castles by the sea It would be wrong to imagine the Marche coast as just a sequence of resort towns. Certainly the beaches are the first thing the visitor notes but if we go inland up into the hills we find unforgettable castles overlooking the sea in what are called the "high towns", which offer wonderful urban sceneries but with the further peculiarity to be not far from the sea. In the province of Pesaro and Urbino we have Gabicce Monte, Fiorenzuola di Focara, Trebbiantico, Novilara and Candelara. In the province of Ancona we have Falconara Alta, castle of the big coast centre of Falconare Marittima, and Montemarciano and then, south of Ancona, Recanati, Sant'Elpidio a Mare and Potenza Picena that are all quite far from the sea and are therefore their coastal parts have become autonomous (Porto Recanati, Porto Sant'Elpidio, Porto Potenza Picena). More examples of this marine development which originated the "high town" as the old centre of these fishing villages are Cupra Marittima with Marano or Grottammare Alta, just to mention a few. |
