Places of Pilgrimage and Worship
The Benedictines were the first religious order to settle in this region. They had great human and material resources and their aims were administrative as well as evangelical. It is thanks to the abbeys, with their tireless copying of antiques manuscripts, that the scientific and cultural heritage has been preserved, allowing the rebirth of western culture. So a visit to the scriptorium of the hermitage at Fonte Avellana is an absolute must. With economic and cultural development the number of abbeys grew (more than100) as well as the number of hermitages and cenobies (over 200). For centuries these ecclesiastical hierarchies flourished with sanctuaries constantly financed by popular devotion. The case of the Sanctuary of Loreto is of prime importance but there is also the sanctuary of Santa Maria Goretti in Corinaldo, of San Nicola in Tolentino and Santa Maria in Castagnola in Chiaravalle. |
