Lay towns in the Marche In the 18th and 19th centuries, many theatres were built not only in the main towns of the Marche but also in many of the smaller ones. These are all jewels of theatres, a symbol of middle class lay culture that preferred to distinguish, even in its buildings, places of power rather than worship. Other examples of laity in the Marche are the Ducal Palace in Urbino, the Lazzaretto by Vanvitelli in Ancona, the Arcade by Ercolani, the Annoniano Forum and the Della Rovere fortress in Senigallia, the Logge dei Mercanti in Ancona and, not to be forgotten, the Sferisterio of Macerata, originally built as a stadium for the game of the "bracciale" and financed by a hundred private citizens. Today it hosts the famous Macerata Opera Festival. |
